Marilyn Ashford-Brown has been inspired over the years by the music of the late, Phyllis Hyman. Very few know her story and connection to the legend. Marilyn once shared the stage with Ms. Hyman along with Pieces of A Dream. You Know How To Love Me is from Marilyn's forthcoming CD, which will be devoted to some of the greatest recordings of Ms. Hyman's career.
Can You Handle It was significant to Marilyn's professional recording career. It was originally recorded by Marilyn's former group Sasss, the lead vocal was later replaced by the Late, Sharon Redd and went on to become a huge hit. During 1980, Sasss had just completed recording the track and was heading to the U.K. with Bobby Thurston for a tour to promote You've Got What It Takes, also a huge hit. Marilyn would go on to work with Producers, Dexter Wansel and Al Johnson.
Marilyn Ashford-Brown has always dreamed of performing with an Orchestra, but never would have imagined that she would do it by sharing the same stage with a presidential contender. In 2008, she received an invitation to perform during the Congressional Black Caucus Annual Dinner in Washington D. C. at the D. C.Convention Center. The special guest speaker of the evening would be non other than Candidate, Barack Obama.
Shortly after her performance accompanied by the Clarence Knight Orchestra, the now President Barack Obama and our beautiful First Lady Michelle appeared on stage.
(May 21, 2016) If you look around long enough among the branches of your family tree, you'll find one: the savvy and sophisticated auntie, cousin or godmother you adore spending time with because of her fly wardrobe, mother-wit and infectious enthusiasm about love and life. That's the vibe that soul diva Marilyn Ashford Brown has cultivated over the years as a live performer and recording artist and what listeners can hear in "Sassy Lady."
Written by industry veterans Cynthia Biggs and Dexter Wansel (Patti Labelle, Teddy Pendergrass and The Jones Girls), "Sassy" is an invigorating uptempo aimed at the "grown and sexy" set, offering advice and inspirational anecdotes about what separates mere women from, well, being a "Sassy Lady." Perfect theme music for escaping the blues, a Ladies Night Out or even a reminder to stay cool as you grit your teeth through that morning drive, "Sassy" ends Brown's recording sabbatical and will remind fans of why she was missed. Marilyn Ashford-Brown is a former member of the group Sasss who's music was very popular throughout the United Kingdom. They were the voices behind the late Sharon Redd's Can You Handle It hit which was originally to be the groups first release. Marilyn Ashford-Brown is also the voice on various recordings, including Pieces of a Dream's Fo Five Fo & Forever Lasting Love (featuring Grover Washington, Jr.) and Lou Rawls, In the Night and has had a lasting working relationship with Dexter Wansel and Cynthia Biggs who wrote her newest single, Sassy Lady.
